Thoughts for Thursday #8: Happy New Year!

Quotes that strike my fancy!

‎”A happy New Year! Grant that I

May bring no tear to any eye

When this New Year in time shall end

Let it be said I’ve played the friend,

Have lived and loved and labored here,

And made of it a happy year.”

~~Edgar Guest, by way of my friend, CDB.

“We will open the book.

Its pages are blank.

We are going to put words on them

ourselves.

The book is called

“Opportunity”

and its first chapter is

New Year’s Day.”

~~Edith Lovejoy Pierce

Timely Tips #8: Make a Comic Strip

Tips and tidbits I’ve gleaned over the years from kids, parents, teachers, professional development, and personal experience.

Check out bitstrips, where you can make your own comic strips! This is my first attempt.

Many of my students over the years have made their first real writing attempts creating their own comics.

Uncle David!! Uncle David!!

My first grandchild was born in July, 2008. He is always doing or saying something to entertain me!

So at 2 AM Monday morning, my grandson is in my room, rolling around on the floor, yelling, “Uncle David!  Uncle David!”  We had seen him at our Boxing Day party at my daughter’s home.

Today, he was playing with his ride-on motorcycle, and he called it an “uncle-cycle.”  Uncle David has a motorcycle.

Thought for Thursday #7: Living Life “On Purpose”

Quotes that strike my fancy!

“There is nothing exclusive about this path; it is open to anyone who dares to live a life that is on purpose.” ~~Christine Myers

Just a little twist on living a life with a purpose.

“Living a life on purpose” just spoke to me–making choices deliberately and not just letting life happen to you.

So, another quote from my daughter.  I can’t help it!  I find her very inspiring!!

You can find her blog about it here.

Book Bytes: Online Learning

I love to read! I’ll share my thoughts (book bytes instead of sound bites) on old favorites and new books for children and adults here.

Do you have a high school senior or a current college student in the family? In this day and age, they probably will take at least a class or two online.

This book, Online Learning: A User-Friendly Approach for High School and College Students by Leslie Bowman, would be a terrific last minute stocking stuffer (you can get it on Kindle, Nook, and iPad!)

Click on the book cover to read the reviews.

While the strategies for self-directed learning are designed to help the student be successful in online classes, many will also help the first-time college student develop the skills needed to manage their overall college learning experience.

It’s an easy to read book, and I recommend it highly!

Random Ramblings: Just a Handwriting Joke

Musings that don’t seem to fit anywhere else!

Winter Solstice, Total Lunar Eclipse, and Turning 21!

Musings that don’t seem to fit anywhere else!

My youngest daughter turns 21 on December 21st.

A total lunar eclipse and winter solstice haven’t occurred on the same day since 1638.

Happy 21st Birthday, Emily!!

You truly are special!!

Timely Tips #7: Hand Preference

Tips and tidbits I’ve gleaned over the years from kids, parents, teachers, professional development, and personal experience.

Just a quick tip I read in Teaching Students with Dyslexia and Dysgraphia by Virginia W. Berninger and Beverly J. Wolf.

Teaching Students with Dyslexia and Dysgraphia book cover

“It helps students to associate hand preference with the classroom environment. Teachers can mark the correct side of the desk or remind children that when facing the front of the room their writing hand is toward the windows or other classroom landmarks, for example.” (p 81)

This could easily be used at home, whether for homework or homeschooling.  Sometimes wearing a ring, bracelet or watch on the preferred hand is a useful reminder.

Do you have any suggestions for helping a child remember which hand to use for writing?

My Grandson’s Antics and Words

My first grandchild was born in July, 2008. He is always doing or saying something to entertain me!

“Buckle the tree!”

That’s what he says when he wants us to plug in the Christmas tree lights.

My Grandson’s Antics and Words

My first grandchild was born in July, 2008. He is always doing or saying something to entertain me!

DGS is sitting quietly on the floor, picking at something on his lap.

Me: What’ve you got, D?

D: I’ve got messy.

Then he stands up and reveals the pile of cornbread crumbs he’s made. Now he’s picking them all up piece by piece and throwing them away.
